By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The National Emergency Commission agreed to a new agreement for the purchase of 3.5 million vaccines against covid-19 with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The purchase is valued at more than $1.5 million paid for by the National Insurance Institute. These vaccines will be used for the booster and to continue inoculating children ages 5 to 12 years old. The new order of vaccines are expected to be delivered during 2022. Also last week, Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Foreign Minister, announced the donation of 200,070 doses of Pfizer vaccines from France to Costa Rica. According to Le Drian, the vaccines could be delivered next year, through the "Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access" campaign, COVAX, which is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to vaccines approved by the World Health Organization. "The political authorities of this country (Costa Rica) had made the request (for the donation to France), so we have decided to make a donation of 200,000 of the Pfizer brand that could be arriving at the beginning of next year," Le Drian said. Last week, Pfizer completed the delivery of more than 6 million vaccines purchased in 2020. So far, the government has imported more than 8.2 million vaccines reaching the full vaccination of 80% of that target population. As of Friday, there are 7,343 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics.
