By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Costa Rica spent $279
million in 2020 in attention to the national
health emergency caused by the pandemic,
according to the Ministry of Health.
This figure is equivalent to 0.5 % of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), comparable to $54.8 per capita, according to the study made by the Ministry and the Pan American Health Organization This study is the first in the region to document public spending on health, they said. The analysis used the method based on standards of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and other international organizations that allow to classify and explain the expenditure. According to the authorities, the largest proportion of the expense was executed by Social Security. That organization spent approximately $184 million. In addition, the National Emergency Commission spent $54 million and the rest was spent in the ministry. In attending covid patients, these organizations spent 63.5% of the total budget. And the rest was spent on preventive actions such as the mass vaccination campaign against covid-19. Regarding the expenditure made on infrastructure and medical equipment, it was budgeted at $27.8 million in 2020. An 80% of that expense was for the purchase of medical equipment and the rest was used for the covid-19 patient's attention. The authorities continue with the analysis of this year's spending. The final findings are expected to be released in 2022. Recently, Social Security announced the medical services reopen due to reduction of covid cases.
