Auction for the monkeys
Friends of Nosara is holding a fundraiser and auction for the benefit of the local  howler monkey population from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Selvamar Clubhouse. There is a $30 fee to enter, and the organization said that 100 percent of the money raised would go a non-profit organization that rescues and cares for injured, orphaned and displaced wild animals. More information is on this Web site. This is the fourth annual auction in the Pacific coast community.



French movie for kids
Every first friday of the month the Alliance Française in Barrio Amón invites children to come and watch a French film with Spanish subtitles at 3 p.m. The film for this month is “Une vie de chat” (“A Cat”) for children. The screening is free.


French film series
Tonight kicks of the month-long “Viernes Cinéfilos” at Alliance Française in Barrio Amón, where they will screen french comedies every Friday at 6 p.m. The events are free to the public. Those interested can call the center at 2222-2283.


Elton John
The iconic musical legend has returned to Costa for a single night at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in Tibás. This is Sir Elton John's only stop in Central America during his international tour. Ticket prices range from 19,000 colons to 74,000 colons for VIP.

Wildlife fundraiser
The Nosara Wildlife Rescue is holding a fundraiser and auction for the organization from 5 to 8 p.m, at the Selvamar Clubhouse in Nosara. All proceeds will go to directly to the Costa Rican non-profit. The organization asks for a $30 donation at the door. This includes entrance and free sushi, shish kabobs and desserts. The auctioned items range from yoga classes to hotel stays to massages to jewelry and much more. Those interested can check out the auction list HERE

School begins
The 2012 public school year begins today. The last day of the year will be Dec. 12. The midterm vacation will be from July 2 to 13, according to the Ministerio de Educación Pública.


Tuesday, Feb. 14

Valentines Day charity golf tournament
The 12th annual Have a Heart Charity Golf Tournament begins today at the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course. All proceeds go to benefit the educational system in the Tamarindo area. Tickets cost $150 to participate in the tournament if the entrance is bought before Feb. 2. The price increases after the date. Those interested should call 2653-1945.


Wednesday, Feb. 15

Writing group to meet
The Costa Rican Author’s Group is presenting a seminar “Getting Published”  at 1 p.m. at the Universal Baptist Church in Escazú.  The seminar will include panel presentations covering, article and short story markets, print publishing, and e-publishing.  Each presentation will be followed by questions from the audience. Anyone who has an interest in learning more about publishing are invited to attend by contacting either Allen Dickinson at, allen@humphree.net, or L Michael Rusin at crcaseyboy@gmail.com.  The price is 5,000 colons for those who sign up in advance and  7,500 colones at the door.

American Legion Post 10
Costa Rica's first American Legion post, Post 10 in Escazú, holds its meeting now at noon on the first Wednesday of the month. The post, chartered in 1957, has been revitalized with the addition of more than 20 new members, said a press release. Any former member whose membership has lapsed is welcome to rejoin, it said. The meetings are at the Club Cubano, located in Guachipelin, Escazú, off the road to Caldera, Guachipelin exit, 600 meters north., and any veterans of a uniformed service are invited to attend, the release said. Founded in 1940, the Women's Club of Costa Rica is one of the oldest, continuously operating service organizations in Costa Rica. Current programs focus on education, primarily through scholarships and development of school libraries for children.  WCCR membership numbers 300 English-speaking women from all over the world, drawn together by the motto: Friendship through Service.  Monthly meetings with guest speakers are held the second Wednesday of each month, as well as regular luncheons, teas, and many interest groups.  Guests are welcome and further information can be found at  www.wccr.org.
